Brazil produced 269,800 cars in August, up 1.1 per cent from the previous month and down 7.3 per cent from the previous year, according to Anfavea, the Brazilian association of automobile manufacturers, which released data on Tuesday.

In August, Brazil produced 256,400 cars and light vehicles, up 1.2 percent from the previous month and down 7.9 percent from a year earlier, the data showed. Truck production came in at 10,700 units, down 1.7 percent from the previous month and up 10.7 percent from a year earlier. Bus production to 2,666, month-on-month growth of 1%, year-on-year decline of 10.8%.

In the first eight months of this year, Brazil produced 201.11 million cars, up 1.7 percent year-on-year. Among them, Brazil produced 1.914,600 cars and light vehicles, up 1.7% year on year. Truck production was 77,000 units, up 13.1 per cent year on year. Bus production was 19,300, down 6.9 percent year on year.

In terms of employment, the number of people employed in Brazil's automobile industry was 128,100 in August, down 0.4% from the previous month and 3.3% from the previous year.

In terms of exports, Brazil exported 36,700 automobiles in August, down 12.8% month-on-month and 34.6% year-on-year. In the first eight months of this year, Brazil's automobile exports totaled 309,000 units, down 37.9% year-on-year.

Industry insiders say the decline is due to weaker car sales in Brazil's domestic market and a sharp drop in exports. Argentina is Brazil's biggest market for car exports, accounting for 70% of Brazil's total. Argentina has been buying fewer Brazilian cars since the middle of last year as the economic crisis deepens. Imports from Mexico, Colombia and Chile also continued to decline.
